Explore Scientific's ED80 80mm f/6 Carbon Fiber APO Refractor Telescope offers an convenient balance between aperture and weight, making it ideal for lunar and planetary viewing with the ability to resolve bright deep-sky objects, while still being highly portable. Its small form-factor produces a fast focal ratio and makes it perfect as a grab-and-go option, or set up on a dual-mount rig for astrophotography/astroimaging. Using HOYA extra low-dispersion (ED) glass in an apochromatic triplet lens configuration, with fully multi-coated optics, produces images that are clear and bright without fringing, halos, or distortion across the entire field of view, with true color rendition and high-contrast.

Offered here as an OTA-only option for those with reliable support systems, the carbon fiber tube weighs just 5-pounds to be easily carried by medium-sized mounts. The carbon fiber also resists the expansion and contraction common in metal tubes when moving between extreme temperatures, which can cause the internal lens elements to move out of collimation over time and affecting the scope's ability to achieve sharp focus and cause fringing and halos. Its sturdy rack-and-pinion focuser can handle heavier eyepieces and accessories without flexing, while the wide 2" drawtube ensures complete coverage of imaging sensors during astrophotography without vignetting the scene.

Optical Tube Assembly
  • 80mm aperture
  • f/6 focal ratio
  • 480mm focal length
  • Refractor-style optical design
  • Extra low-dispersion (ED) HOYA glass reduces chromatic aberration, which causes halos and fringing, for improved color rendition and contrast
  • Proprietary anti-reflection EMD (Enhanced Multi-coatings) on all optics improve light transmission, color rendition, clarity, and contrast
  • Apochromatic triplet optical design virtually eliminates chromatic aberrations
  • Resolution: 1.45 arc sec, Dawes Limit
  • Carbon fiber optical tube reduces weight without sacrificing strength, and resists the expansion/contraction caused by temperature fluctuations which can cause internal lenses to move out of alignment and affecting image quality and focusing ability
Mounting
  • Optical tube assembly (OTA) only: Mount and tripod required for proper use
  • Mounting ring assembly has an integrated handle provide more secure handling during setup and breakdown
  • OTA placement is adjustable on mounting ring assembly for precise balancing, and finderscope and focusing knob orientation
  • Vixen-style dovetail plate is compatible with a variety of mounts
  • Lightweight and durable carbon fiber optical tube weighs just 5 pounds
Observation Details
  • Sturdy rack-and-pinion focuser resists flexing when using heavy eyepieces or imaging rigs
  • Large 2" drawtube ensures complete coverage of imaging sensors to avoid vignetting for astrophotography/imaging
  • 2" 90° star diagonal places head in comfortable viewing position when OTA is aimed at or near the zenith, dielectric-coated mirror limits light-loss
  • 1.25" reducer adapter enables the use of smaller eyepieces and accessories
  • Two 2" threaded extender-tubes provide additional back-focus range if required for astrophotography
  • Pre-mounted bracket for user-supplied finderscope

    Blurb:
Offering true diffraction-limited optics and designed with portability in mind, Explore Scientific’s ED80CF telescope is a perfect grab-and-go instrument for exploring the skies. This refracting telescope features an 80mm air-spaced, triplet objective lens with genuine HOYA ED glass that is truly apochromatic with our proprietary EMD coatings to produce images of such high contrast and sharpness that we welcome direct comparison to any other ED APO in its class. Witness the magnificent desolation of the endless variations of the lunar terrain, the subtle olivine modulations and storms of Saturn and the serene structure of its ring system. Explore the broad range of celestial objects, including the deep sky treasures of the entire Messier and Herschel catalogues. A lightweight carbon fiber tube eliminates focus change due to shrinking or expansion due to temperature changes and a retractable dew shield protects against moisture and stray light. The telescope also has a three-point push/pull collimation cell, a two-speed two-inch focuser and a precision-polished two-inch mirror diagonal that is 99% reflective.

    Extended copy:
A great entrée into the realm of serious telescopes, Explore Scientific’s ED80CF combines high-end optics and well-executed design to create an exceptional instrument for everything from deep sky observation to comet-chasing to astrophotography.
With its 80mm triplet objective lens, the refracting telescope uses true diffraction-limited, apochromatic optics to open up the skies revealing wonders like the magnificent desolation of the lunar terrain or the vibrant nature of Saturn with its swirling storms and serene ring system structure. The lens is air-spaced with a middle element made of genuine HOYA FCD1 extra-low dispersion glass, and all air-to-glass surfaces have been multi-coated with Explore Scientific’s proprietary EMD (Enhanced Multi-layered Deposition) coating. All of these features collide to produce stunning high contrast images with crisp definition that encourage viewers to explore the celestial secrets of a broad range of subjects, including the deep sky treasures of the entire Messier and Herschel catalogues. The quality of the optics also allows those seeking to push magnification based on their choices of eyepieces or focal extenders to do so without sacrificing clarity.
The emphasis on precision continues outside of the lens construction with the addition of a three-point collimation cell that allows for pinpoint adjustments of the objective lens. The two-inch focuser has two-speed control, and multiple set screws are in place to lock all elements.
Sized to fit a vast range of eyepieces, the included diagonal has a precision-polished, two-inch mirror that is 99% reflective to transmit even more light. The tube that connects the diagonal to the scope itself is also tapered for added security should one of the set screws be accidentally loosened.
Beyond the optics, the ED80CF can list its carbon fiber housing among its many assets. In addition to being lightweight, the material prevents unintended focus changes from the tube shrinking or expanding due to temperature fluctuations, which can be crucial to maintaining a continuous clear image during a long night of astrophotography or observation. The scope also has a retractable dew shield that prevents moisture from building up on the lens and eliminates the image interference caused by stray light. A bracket for a finder scope is also mounted on the tube.
For added versatility, the telescope comes with two extension tubes, has a vixen-style mounting plate and is equipped to fit both European- and American-style tripod threads.
To further guarantee its standing in the grab-and-go class of observation tools, the telescope comes in a deluxe storage case with a clamping lock system and a molded foam interior that protects the device and its accessories.
All in all, the ED80CF maximizes its exceptional optic elements and high design standards to create such brilliant images that Explore Scientific welcomes direct comparison to any other ED APO telescope in its class.
