Kowa Pure Fluorite Crystal Flagship Model with a Large 88mm Diameter Lens
In 2008 the Cornell Ornithology Lab conducted ScopeQuest, a detailed comparison test of 36 spotting scopes. Optics (ranging in price from $220.00 to $4500.00) were viewed side-by-side and rated according to sharpness, color fidelity, edge-to-edge focus, brightness, distortion, and general optical quality. The testing team also considered ease of handling/focus, and eye relief (scopes with longer eye relief are better for eyeglass wearers). Two of the finest spotting scopes AccurateShooter.com has used, the Zeiss Diascope 85 T FL, and the Swarovski APS 80 HD, performed very well as expected, and ended up near the top of the list. The TeleVue-85 APO, a very large refractor, received the highest ratings for image quality (both at 20X and 60X), but lost points for easy of use and general “feel”. The overall winner among the 36 spotting scopes tested was the Kowa TSN-883 Prominar, a new-generation spotter with a huge 88mm objective, dual focusing knobs, and spectacular flourite glass. The results of Cornell’s spotting scope test are found on the LivingBird.org website. Click the link below for a charrt ranking all 36 scopes according to their overall ratngs.
Spotting scope Test Summary

For birders willing to take the plunge for the very best optics at whatever cost, the top choices, in my view, are either the Kowa 883/884 or 773/774 or the Swarovski HD 80mm or 65mm scopes. Any of these top scopes will give you years of pure birding pleasure.
Ken Rosenberg is director of Conservation Science at the Lab.

The flagship of Kowa spotting scopes with an extremely large 88mm objective lens. The enthusiasm behind Kowa’s 60 years of spotting scope development is manifested in this supreme model. Its optical performance and user friendliness leaves a satisfying impression on the user.

The TSN-883 88mm Spotting Scope and TE-11WZ 25-60x Eyepiece Kit combines a green, angled-viewing Kowa TSN-883 88mm Spotting Scope and a TE-11WZ 25-60x Eyepiece. The kit allows hobbyists and enthusiasts to fully take advantage of scope's exemplary optics and the included high zoom wide angle eyepiece at the same time.

With the fully multicoated optics and PROMINAR XD lens, the TSN-883 Spotting Scope will provide improved light transmission and clear images of your favorite landscapes and wildlife. The very wide 88mm objective aperture will allow your scope to collect more light and obtain brighter images of most memorable moments like around dusk or down. To offer true color, improved contrast, and image sharpness for your eye or camera, the PROMINAR XD Lenses have extra-low dispersion elements that reduce distortions.

Made from the magnesium alloy at its core, the body is ultra lightweight and deformation-resistant. While the housing is o-ring sealed waterproof and nitrogen-filled fogproof on the inside, on the outside it has a green rubberized covering that camouflages the scope and provides a secure safe grip. The body also features an integrated sliding sunshade, a textured focusing knob, and a revolving collar for 1/4"-20 tripod adaptability.

With a high zoom, the included TE-11WZ Eyepiece will satisfy most of your observational needs. Using a simple bayonet mount, it installs quickly and easily and the knurled dial provides for a smooth zooming experience. To compliment the spotter's performance, it is also waterproof and fogproof and maintains the same optical quality.

Kowa TSN-883 88mm PROMINAR PFC Spotting Scope (Angled Viewing, Requires Eyepiece)

The TSN-883 Angled 88mm PROMINAR PFC Spotting Scope is a world-class spotter that redefines the standards of color brilliance, sharpness, and brightness.

The TSN-883 uses an element of pure fluorite crystal (PFC) glass in its construction, which greatly minimizes chromatic aberration. This ensures maximum efficiency in its light gathering, producing a clear visual range and sharp imagery that traditional glass lenses cannot attain at their highest magnifications and with the strongest of subject/background contrast changes. Fluorite is extremely expensive, but the subtle difference between the viewing from the PROMINAR-equipped TSN-883 and even the very best normal scopes would be apparent even to a novice. Kowa's use of their patented C3 prism multi-coating process increases image brightness significantly over their prior-generation models that featured flourite.

The 883's housing is made of a magnesium alloy that defines maximum durability and lightweight construction, resulting is a compact, ergonomic, and functional design for extreme nature and outdoor enthusiasts wanting only the very best. It sets a benchmark for the combination of large objective with small weight and mass.

As the angled viewing model of Kowa's flagship line, this scope makes sharing the viewing among multiple observers quite easy and is also generally considered more comfortable for longer glassing sessions. An angled scope allows for a slightly smaller, shorter tripod and requires a bit more experience to quickly locate the subject in the scope.
