Combining portability with connectivity, the Sky-Watcher Skymax 102 AZ-GTi 102mm f/13 GoTo Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope gives users an easy-to-use observational platform for viewing the Moon, planets, and brighter deep-sky objects right out of the box.

The compact Maksutov-Cassegrain design is combined with a limited-diffraction optical system and fully multi-coated lens surfaces. The Mak design corrects off-axis aberrations like comas and chromatic aberrations, while the limited-diffraction system prevents light from being scattered by defects in the mirrors and corrector plate. These complementary features, plus the anti-reflection coatings, work together to produce crisp and clear views with true-color rendition and improved contrast and resolution.

Guiding the optical tube assembly (OTA) is Sky-Watcher's AZ-GTi GoTo AZ mount. It features an integrated WiFi module that generates its own local network signal to allow wireless control via a smartphone running their free SynScan Pro app for Android and iOS devices. The app is intuitively laid out for easy setup, navigation, and exploration of the sky—even if you've never looked through a telescope before. Packed with over 42,900 objects with daytime and nighttime alignment-assistance procedures, plus advanced features such as periodic error correction, backlash compensation, tours, and DSLR camera control, the SynScan app is a powerful yet easy-to-use way to control the mount.

To give users a complete observation platform, Sky-Watcher includes a sturdy yet lightweight aluminum tripod that comes with an extension pier. The pier adds additional height for easier viewing when the OTA is aimed at or near the zenith. Two eyepieces, which produce 52x and 130x magnifications, give you a comfortable range for viewing near- and deep-sky objects, while a 90° diagonal places your head in a more comfortable and natural viewing position.

  • 102mm f/13 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope (OTA Only)

Similar to their Schmidt cousins, this 102mm f/13 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope from Sky-Watcher exchanges the conventional front corrector plate with a convex meniscus lens, which results in a smaller secondary mirrorlimiting obstruction and increasing contrast, while eliminating the need for periodic collimation. The Maksutov optical path results in a slower focal ratio and narrower field of view versus a similar Schmidt, but the optical benefits, when coupled with the larger aperture and fully multi-coated optics, make this an ideal scope for solar, lunar, planetary, and deep-sky observation of bright objects like stars and clusters.

The scope is outfitted with a 1.25" visual back and, to get users started, Sky-Watcher includes 10 and 25mm eyepieces that produce low and moderate magnifications and a 90° star diagonal for more comfortable viewing when the optical tube assembly (OTA) is pointed at or near the celestial zenith. The OTA is offered here without a mount or tripod for users who have a platform or want to use it as part of a dual-OTA setup for star parties or observation/imaging rigs. It is outfitted with a Vixen-style dovetail plate for easy attachment onto many mounts. This OTA's compact form factor belies its observation power and resolution and is ideally suited as a grab-and-go option for quick observation sessions or heading out to remote locations.

  • AZ-GTi GoTo AZ Mount

Ideal for small- to medium-aperture refractors and catadioptrics, the Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi GoTo AZ Mount features an integrated WiFi module that generates its own local network signal to allow wireless control via a smartphone running their free SynScan Pro app for Android and iOS devices. The app is intuitively laid out for easy setup, navigation, and exploration of the sky—even if you've never looked through a telescope before. Packed with over 42,900 objects with daytime and nighttime alignment-assistance procedures, plus advanced features such as periodic error correction (PEC), backlash compensation, tours, and DSLR camera control, the SynScan app is a powerful yet easy-to-use way to control the mount.

Dual-axis motors slew to and track objects, while dual encoders on each axis precisely follow the mount's movement and maintain its alignment—even if the mount is moved by hand. A Vixen-style dovetail saddle makes mounting a variety of optical tube assemblies (OTAs) fast and easy, and with a payload capacity of up to 11 pounds it is ideal for refractors and Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes. Supporting the mount is an adjustable-height aluminum tripod. The AZ-GTi comes with a pier extension that is located between the tripod and mount head to provide additional height for easier viewing without sacrificing stability when the OTA is aimed at or near the zenith.

    Mount
    • Motorized alt-azimuth design
    • Integrated WiFi module allows for direct connection to smartphones without the need for routers or Internet connection
    • DC servo motors precisely move the mount on both axes with minimum vibration
    • Dual encoders on each axis maintain alignment, even when mount is moved by hand, letting you move the mount manually across the sky while keeping GoTo functionality
    • Altitude and azimuth clutch knobs enable easy manual movement
    • SNAP port allows optional remote shutter-release cables to be connected to mount for advanced astrophotography
    • Runs on eight user-supplied AA batteries or optional 12 VDC power cord
